Rune Tree Guide - Account-Wide Branch Order

A practical guide to the eight-branch Rune Tree: what each branch actually unlocks, the recommended order from the rune catalog, and how the branches interact with the Cube and heroes.

The Rune Tree is an account-wide passive system, not a set of per-hero sockets. It unlocks at Hero Level 3, contains 197 nodes across 195 connections in patch 1.00.26, and is fully resettable. The current rune catalog records eight branches with an explicit Recommended Order field for each one.

This guide walks through every branch in that order, states what it actually does according to the catalog, and points out where a branch interacts with another system (the Cube, heroes, or storage) that you should plan around.

Why the Tree Is Account-Wide

Two consequences follow from the "account-wide, not per hero" design:

  • Every hero in your roster benefits from the same passive nodes, so a Formation unlock helps Knight, Ranger, and Sorcerer simultaneously.
  • The investment is resettable, which means you can experiment with branch order without locking your account into a bad sequence. Treat the Recommended Order as the starting point, not as a rule you cannot revisit.

There are no per-hero rune slots in the current data. If a previous guide, forum post, or video tells you to slot a "Rune of Bulwark" into Knight's second rune slot, treat that as outdated - the catalog has no such slot and no such rune.

Branch Order at a Glance

The catalog records this Recommended Order across the eight branches:

The total of the recorded per-branch node counts is 22 visible nodes inside a 197-node tree. The Recommended Order is what the catalog endorses for the visible branches; the remaining nodes are intermediate connections that do not have named branch entries in the rune catalog.

Branch 1 - Rune of Command / Formation (3 nodes)

The Formation branch unlocks the 2nd hero slot, the 3rd hero slot, and a second active skill slot per hero. It is the single highest-impact branch in the tree because it gates how many heroes you can field and how many active skills each can use.

The catalog records these three nodes as separate rune entries; treat the branch as the gate to your team size before any combat or economy branch.

Branch 2 - Rune of Wealth (4 nodes)

The Wealth branch boosts gold per kill, gold from boss stages, and the Alchemy gold bonus. It is the fastest way to keep the gold economy flowing into the Cube and the Rune Tree itself.

Pair Wealth with the Formation branch as soon as the team size gate is open. The gold surplus feeds back into the remaining tree, which makes the rest of the order cheaper to traverse.

Branch 3 - Rune of Growth (1 node)

A flat experience-per-kill bonus. It is the cheapest single-node branch in the tree and pairs well with Wealth during the leveling push through Act 1 to Act 4.

Do not overweight Growth relative to Wealth. The gold economy has more downstream effects than a flat XP boost does.

Branch 4 - Rune of Expansion / Storage (3 nodes)

Adds inventory slots, stash pages, and the auto-open chest routine (Rune of the Mainspring). Auto-open is the single biggest quality-of-life unlock in the early game because it removes the per-chest manual interaction.

Storage is also a prerequisite for the chest branches to feel rewarding, because more inventory means more room for the extra drops.

Branch 5 - Chest Drop Rate / Capacity (2 nodes)

Two nodes that boost chest drop rate and the number of slots per chest. Indirect gear progression that pays off once Storage is online.

Order 5 is the catalog's recorded position, but in practice this branch is a continuation of Order 4 rather than an independent investment.

Branch 6 - Rune of Repose / Offline (3 nodes)

Unlocks and boosts the offline reward cap (8 hours by default) with two percentage nodes for offline gold and offline XP. This branch is the right call for a player whose play schedule is sporadic.

If you play daily and clear the offline cap manually, this branch can be deferred until after the combat branches.

Branch 7 - Rune of Might / Resilience / Haste / Frenzy (4 nodes)

Four combat-stat nodes covering ATK, Armor, Move Speed and Attack Speed. These are the only combat-stat nodes in the catalog and they apply account-wide, which means every hero in the roster gains the same percentage bonus.

The catalog does not record per-hero rune slots, so there is no way to specialize these nodes to a single hero. Plan accordingly.

Branch 8 - Rune of Alchemy / Forging (2 nodes)

Two Cube-side passives that boost Alchemy gold conversion and Forging output. Endgame investments that pay off once the Cube itself is leveled and your saved-input pipeline is running.

The branch is last because it depends on the Cube being active; until the Cube is generating value, the Alchemy / Forging passives do not have inputs to act on.

Why Respec Is Cheap

The catalog explicitly records every branch as fully refundable. The pragmatic implication is that branch order is a starting recommendation, not a permanent decision. The most common reasons to respec are:

  • A balance patch changes which combat stat scales best.
  • A new hero or stage shifts where you spend the most time.
  • You want to test whether a higher-priority offline / economy branch actually pays off for your schedule.

What the Cube Recipe Rotation Adds

The Cube runs a weekly recipe rotation - Tier 4 Upgrade on Monday, Thursday and Sunday, Rune Recycle on Tuesday and Friday, Tier 5 Material on Wednesday and Saturday. If you use Rune Recycle to convert three duplicates of one rune family into the next rarity, the resulting rune feeds straight back into the same account-wide tree.

That makes Rune Recycle days the cheapest way to climb rarity without spending gold, and it slightly reinforces the catalog's choice to keep all branches account-wide.

Wrap-up

The Rune Tree is a single account-wide passive system with eight named branches and a catalog-supplied Recommended Order:

  1. Formation, 2. Wealth, 3. Growth, 4. Storage, 5. Chests, 6. Repose, 7. Combat, 8. Cube.

Treat that order as the starting position, use respec freely when patches or your schedule shift, and remember that no branch is hero-specific. If a source tells you to slot a per-hero rune, that source is describing a system the current catalog does not record.
